China asks hospitals to tighten security

Three doctors were stabbed by a patient in the OPD at the First People’s Hospital of Wenling in Zhejiang Province on Friday. One of them succumbed to the injuries while another is in critical condition.

The patient, a 33-year-old man, was reportedly unhappy with the results of his nasal cavity surgery.

The stabbing follows a spate of violent incidents at hospitals across the country in past few months. According to the Chinese Hospital Association, there are, on average, 27 cases of violence against medical staff at a hospital in China every year.

Concerned about this trend, the authorities have issued new guidelines this week, asking hospitals to increase both security personnel and security checks.

Some hospitals, however, have complained that the changes will be difficult to implement.

The incidents of violence and the new guidelines are being intensely debated across Chinese social media. Here are some of the reactions from netizens on Sina Weibo.
